    The Author . . .

GM_Photo (Portrait) Gina Mohammed is a research scientist, speaker, and writer, with a Ph.D. in Plant Physiology from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, and a B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Toronto in Ontario.  She has authored over a hundred scientific journal papers and published magazine articles for the general public.

A popular speaker, Dr. Mohammed has presented seminars, workshops, lectures, and keynote addresses to diverse audiences across North America.  One of her favourite topics is Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) – the herbs, medicinals, foods, and household & aesthetic goods obtainable from the forest.  She wrote The Canadian NTFP Business Companion to help entrepreneurs set up their own NTFP enterprises.  Gina was an Adjunct Professor at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, and she has served in a variety of advisory roles to government and industry.  She is presently an advisor to the European Space Agency.

Gina and her husband now own and operate P&M Technologies, a science and information technology company in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada.  In her spare time, Gina is a stained glass artisan who has designed hundreds of original pieces, including a unique collection of northern wildflowers.  She also writes a series of on-line Christian devotionals called SONbeamZ for young teens and pre-teens.

Further information is available on Gina's web site.

Nathalie Gagné is a talented young Québec artist.  She was only twelve years old when she created the drawings for CATNIP and KEROSENE GRASS, yet she had already won prizes for some of her other work.  We commissioned her again for the drawings in Miracles & Mustard Seeds.  Nathalie is now all grown up and lives near Montreal.

    The Gopher . . .

Dan Pernokis has played with computers for more than 40 years as a systems & applications programmer, systems analyst, network administrator, software instructor, and customer support representative.  He has written systems manuals and user guides, and he is co-author of the ANSI computer language standard for PL/B.

Dan's eclectic background is anchored by a bachelor's degree in earth sciences, with interests in astronomy, natural science, and aviation & space.  In addition, he has eight years' experience in professional broadcasting in Toronto and has done audio-visual production work.  His favourite comic strip is Calvin & Hobbes.

Dan and his wife now run their own consulting company, P&M Technologies, where Dan has turned his talents to developing web sites and publishing books.  He did the image processing and the layout & design work for CATNIP and KEROSENE GRASS, Miracles & Mustard Seeds, and The Northern Wildflowers Collection of stained glass patterns on CD.  He did the same – and took many of the photographs – for The Canadian NTFP Business Companion DVD.

Further information is available on Dan's web site.

    The Company . . .

Candlenut Books was formed in 2002.  The company was named for the Candlenut Tree, also known as the kukui – the official state tree of Hawaii – read about it in the Catnip book!  The logo is a stylized kukui leaf.  We publish, distribute & sell our own works, and we sell some good quality self-published books by a handful of local authors we know personally.

Candlenut Books is owned and operated by Dan Pernokis and Gina Mohammed.  The company is based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada.
